Kyoto Aquarium (Location: Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto City; General Manager: Kazuyoshi Sakano) is pleased to announce that, in commemoration of "Giant Salamander Day*1,2" on September 9th, it will hold a special exhibition, "Giant Salamander Mimicry - 'Imitation': The Beginning of Technology," from September 5th (Sat) to December 28th (Mon), 2026, in which visitors can learn about the mysterious ecology of the giant salamander through "mimicry items" that mimic the physical characteristics of the giant salamander.

"Biomimicry" refers to the practice of observing and imitating the remarkable structures and functions of animals in nature, and using that knowledge to develop useful technologies and products for our daily lives. This time, we'll introduce "Giant Salamander Mimicry," mimicry items that may be useful in our lives, inspired by the characteristics of the giant salamander. Some of these items may seem a little strange, but we planned this project with the hope that it will inspire us to think about the future based on the characteristics of animals.

The exhibition will feature three types of items, including the "Giant San Tongs," which utilize the giant sank's characteristic of having three rows of small teeth on its upper and lower jaws that it uses to grab onto prey and never let go, and the "Giant San Boots," which were inspired by its streamlined head. Visitors can also enjoy explanatory videos and panels presented in a TV shopping style by the animal care staff, along with the characteristics that inspired the creation of these mimicry items.

In addition, there are plans to hold events where you can learn about giant salamanders from various angles, such as a measurement session for the total length and weight of juvenile giant salamanders before they reach adulthood, the "Giant Salamander Mimicry Collection" where you can pretend to be a giant salamander, and a talk event featuring Professor Kanto Nishikawa of Kyoto University.

Furthermore, special food and drink menus will be available to commemorate "Giant Salamander Day." Why not use this once-a-year anniversary as an opportunity to delve into the mysterious ecology of the giant salamander, using giant salamander mimicry as a starting point?

*1 Because the giant salamander's appearance resembles the number "9" and it becomes more active around September for breeding purposes, Kyoto Aquarium applied to the Japan Anniversary Association in April 2018 to designate September 9th as "Giant Salamander Day," and it was approved.

*2 Release dated August 19, 2026: Now in its 9th year! "September 9th is Giant Salamander Day 2026" will be held.

■Mimicry items help us delve deeper into the physical characteristics of the giant salamander.

We will be creating and exhibiting three types of biomimicry items that take advantage of the unique physical characteristics of the giant salamander. The items are: "Giant Salamander Tongs," which utilize the fact that the giant salamander has a total of three rows of small teeth on its upper and lower jaws, and once it grips something it won't let go; "Giant Salamander Boots," which are inspired by the streamlined head that is thought to reduce water resistance; and "Giant Salamander Gloves," which mimic the palm of a giant salamander's hand with a non-slip structure. Visitors can try gripping objects with the tongs and feel the texture of the glove's palm.

The exhibition features explanatory panels and a special TV shopping-style video that details the research that led to the idea for the mimicry items, as well as reviews from the animal care staff who have actually used them. Enjoy learning about the physical characteristics of the giant salamander while you explore.
