Now in its 9th year! "September 9th is Giant Salamander Day 2026" will be held.

Kyoto Aquarium (Location: Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto City; General Manager: Kazuyoshi Sakano) is pleased to announce that it will be holding "September 9th is Giant Salamander Day 2026" to commemorate "Giant Salamander Day" on September 9th, and will be presenting the ecology and charm of giant salamanders through various events.
Kyoto Aquarium designated September 9th as "Giant Salamander Day" because the shape of the giant salamander resembles the number "9" and because giant salamanders become more active around September for breeding purposes. In April 2018, it was officially recognized by the Japan Anniversary Association. This year marks the 9th anniversary since its recognition, and the aquarium will celebrate the day with a total of five events, including some of its most popular annual events.
In anticipation of the anniversary, we will be holding the "Giant Salamander 8-Hour Endurance Breathing Survey" on Thursday, September 3rd and Friday, September 4th. This popular event, which was first held last year and attracted over 100 applicants, will allow visitors and animal care staff to investigate the breathing patterns of eight giant salamanders that could not be surveyed last time. Additionally, on Sunday, September 6th, we will be holding the "Giant Salamander Float Pulling Experience," an annual event where children can pull the giant salamander float, "Oosan Kotaro."
On Wednesday, September 9th, Giant Salamander Day, we will be holding "Measure the Giant Salamander!", where we will measure the total length and weight of our largest giant salamander (a hybrid individual) right in front of our visitors. Last year, it measured 161cm and weighed 32.3kg, but please come and see this year's measurement results in person.
In addition, September will be designated Giant Salamander Month, with approximately 100 giant salamander plush toys appearing at 22 locations throughout Kyoto City, including hotels and the Kyoto Railway Museum. Furthermore, new merchandise will be added, including a giant salamander plush toy made of denim fabric in collaboration with EDWIN, giant salamander ball chains available in six different colors, and a giant salamander backpack that children can carry on their backs.
Let's celebrate "Giant Salamander Day" together at Kyoto Aquarium on September 9th!
