The term "SDGs" is one that we hear often these days. SDGs stand for "sustainable goals" that should be achieved by 2030. We have just released a workbook called "Kyoto Aquarium SDGs Book: Thinking about the richness of oceans and rivers through the mechanisms of aquarium tanks," which encourages people to think about animals and the natural environment by comparing the mechanisms of oceans, rivers, and aquarium tanks.
This time, we'll introduce some of the contents that you might be interested in.
■Aquariums and SDGs?
Aquariums are home to a wide variety of animals, all of which differ in terms of body size, breathing methods, and whether or not they have animals.
For these animals, the aquarium is their environment. Aquariums use various methods, such as adjusting the water temperature and filtering, to create a comfortable living environment for the animals.
So what about the oceans and rivers? How can we make them a livable environment for living animals?
The SDGs Book is a workbook that helps students think about how the abundance of our oceans and rivers is maintained, comparing it to the structure of an aquarium tank. Reading this book will give you an opportunity to think about what you can do to contribute to two of the 17 SDGs: "14. Protect the abundance of the waters below sea level" and "15. Protect the abundance of the land."
