Japanese giant salamander

Known as "one of the world's largest amphibians," the giant salamander is a rare creature whose ecology remains largely a mystery. This native species of giant salamander has lived in Japan since ancient times and is designated as a special national natural monument. Kyoto Aquarium has a large exhibition area where you can enjoy the realistic ecology of the giant salamanders that live in Kyoto's rivers.

Everything about the Yura River, from upstream to downstream, is here!

The upper, middle, and lower reaches of the Yura River are all represented in one aquarium. In the upper reaches, you'll find char and yamame trout, in the middle reaches you'll find mullet and Freshwater minnow, and in the lower reaches you'll find Common carp and other fish.
